DEATH OF MARWOOD. Tuesday Sept 4th, 1883 – C W Lee’s Diary

William Marwood. the common hangman died his residence, Horncastle. on Tuesday afternoon, from inflammation of the lungs, aggravated jaundice. had been gradually sinking since the previous evening. The death of Marwood terminated a somewhat remarkable career. He held the office for something like twelve years, his first engagement being Lincoln in 1871.

When he was appointed to the post he was successful for some time in keeping the fact from the knowledge of his neighbours’; but when it became known, his presence in the little town of Horncastle was not at all appreciated, and he was continually hooted and hissed. This practice gradually wore off, and when not engaged in his professional duties or on circuit, he used to term it, he went in and out ordinary mortal, and his spare time occupied a cobbler in a little shop close to the parish church. He had amassed a fair amount of property, having several cottages of his own, besides several other investments, a marked contrast to his former days, when led most penurious life.

He had for some time past contracted rather dissolute habits, and this circumstance aggravated his illness, and without doubt hastened his death. He leaves a widow but no son. Nothing known in Horncastle to Harwood’s successor.
