PRIVATE JOHN WILLIAM SNOWDEN

John Snowden is one of the 49 casualties of World War 1 and his name is on the Cenotaph memorial in St Marks Church Mosborough.  John William Snowden was born in the year of 31/8/1896 to Thomas Richard and Clara Snowden.  At the age of 4 John lived in Church Street Eckington with his parents, his sisters Catherine, Agnes and Harriett and brother Charles Alfred, according to 1901 census.

                   

1911 Census show that the Snowden family then lived at 78 South Street Mosbro, John then had 3 more brothers, Trevor, Arnold and Reginald Lawrence. At the age of 15 John worked at the Colliery as a Boiler Makers assistant.

 

John enlisted at Rotherham on 5/9/1914 into the ex- 15153 Private King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry & transferred to Plymouth Short-Service RMLI 16/9/14; Plymouth Bn. No.3.  Company MEF 6/2/15 – 4/3/1915. His Service number was PLY/119(S).

 

Private John William Snowden was missing, assumed killed in action at Kum Kale, he died on 04/03/1915 at the aged of 19.  His grave reference Panel 2 to 7 at the Helles Memorial Cemetery at Turkey (Including Gallipoli).

 

John was awarded the following medals: The 14/15 Star Medal, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal, these would have been issued to his father, Thomas Richard and Clara Snowden, of 68, High St., Mosborough, Sheffield.
