PRIVATE ERNEST RAYMOND BUXTON

Ernest is one of the 49 heroes on St Marks Church Cenotaph at St Marks Church, Mosborough Sheffield.  He was born in 1897 and at the age of 14 he worked as a labourer in a brick yard, he lived on Wortley Road, Deepcar Sheffield, with his mum Sarah, his brother James aged 9, and his sister Lena aged 4.  This was according to the 1911 census below.

 

 

Ernest enlisted at Sheffield, he joined the York and Lancaster Regiment in the 10th Service Battalion, his regimental number was 19604.  He died from wounds at No 13 Gen Hos France on 1 May 1917 at the age of 20.  He was buried at Pas de Calais, Boulogne Eastern Part II UK Graves A – F France Cemetery/memorial reference: IV. C. 43.

 

Inscription on Ernest Grave says:

 

“GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS”

 

War Imperial Graves Commission below listed Ernest’s name.

 

 

Private Ernest Raymond Buxton would have received the 14/15 Star Medal, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.  His entry into the war was on 10.9.15 and he first served in France.
