Dr. Humphrey, whose examination in chief closed last night, in the witness-box for cross examination by Sir Charles Russell. The doctor said that on the occasion of the Wirral races Mr. Maybrick told him he had suffered from headaches since the Ascot meeting Iast year.

On the 4th May Mr. Maybrick could retain nothing in his stomach and he administered a remedy on the homeopathic principle.  He noticed no redness of the eyes or eyelids. The patient complained of tickling in the throat.

On May 9th he was found to be suffering from laxity, but he could take nutriment. He consulted with Dr. Carter by request of Mr. Edwin Maybrick. The slopes were from time to time preserved, the forces and mine were tested, but no deposit of arsenic was obtained.

The method adopted was Rheinische’s last.  Witness could not mention any post-mortem symptom which was distinctive of arsenical poisoning, and which was not also distinctive of gastritis or gastro-nitrites. But for the suggestion arsenic, if Mr. Maybrick had died on Wednesday, witness would have certified the cause death acute congestion of the stomach. Re-examined by Mr. Addison, Q.C., Dr. Humphreys said he had not met a case of dyspepsia accompanied by tenesmus, nor case of tenesmus acute as that of Mr. Maybrick. Taking the whole of the circumstances of the case together lie had doubt whatever that Mr. Maybrick died from arsenical poisoning. Dr. William Carter, of Liverpool, deposed to his examination of Mr. Maybrick on May 8th.  His conclusion he was that suffering from acute dyspepsia. (Case proceeding.)
