PRIVATE PERCY SCHWARTZ

Percy was born in Ridgeway, Derbyshire in the Civil Parish of Eckington.  He was born in the year 1889

in the registered quarter of July, August, September, registration district of Chesterfield.  Ancestry reference Volume 7b

Page 701.  1891 Census show that Percy lived with his Grandad Charles F Schwartz and his Grandma Maryte Schwartz, plus his parents Charles and Sarah A Schwartz.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the age of 11 years Edward Percy Schwartz lived on Mosbro Moor with his parents and his brothers Frederick, Alfred and his grandfather Charles F Schwartz who was 79 years of age. His father was an Upholster and owned his own business.

According to the 1911 Census Edward Percy at the age of 21 years lived at 118 High Street Mosbro with his parents, his brothers Frederick, Alfred and sisters Delia, Paris, Fillice plus a younger brother Albert age 2 years old.  Edward Percy then was a Colliery Labourer below ground.

 

Percy enlisted at the age of 22 in the document year 1913.

His regimental number was 1861 and he enlisted into the 1/6th Battalion

Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment.

Percy’s entry into the war was on 28 February 1915 in France.

Percy was killed in action and died on 10 August 1915.

He was buried at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Ypres (Ieper), Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders Belgium. Panel 39 and 41.

The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, often referred to simply as the Menin Gate, bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who died before 16 August 1917 and have no known grave.

The first a family would know of the death of family member was the arrival of a telegram from the War Office.  This would be followed by the World War One Death Plaque and any medals the serviceman would have earned serving his country.
