Joseph Wells Esq dies.

Sudden Death of Joseph Wells, Esq., Eckington Hall.  It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Mr. Wells, which took place at his residence on Monday morning. It appears that until Thursday week he had enjoyed for some time very good health, and on that day looked over many of his works.

Afterwards be attended a sale of some property at Killamarsh, in which place he had considerable interest, on account of his opening out some extensive collieries there. Whilst the sale was proceeding he was seized with apoplexy, and was removed home in a conveyance.

Dr. Bartclome, of Sheffield, and other eminent physicians, attended him, but from the first gave no hopes of his recovery. The deceased gentleman never spoke after his arrival at home. The sad occurrence has thrown quite a gloom over Eckington and the neighbourhood, the drawn blinds of almost every house, and the partly closed shutters Renishaw Park, Mosbro’. and Killamarsh. Mr. Wells was 57 years of age, and leaves a widow and six children to mourn his loss.

The remains of the deceased were interred on Thursday in the burial ground of Eckington Church.  The church and burial ground were crowded some time before the procession arrived. There were nine carriages containing the relatives of the deceased and says our correspondent, ” When these had reached the church the last of the procession had scarcely left the hall, so great was the number of those who attended.

The members of the School Board and the directors of the Gas Company, with the Board of Highways, of which deceased was the chairman, followed after the deceased’s relatives, as also did a portion of his workmen, to the number of 1000.” The Rector (the Rev E. B. Estcourt) officiated.
