PRIVATE HILARY CARLIN

Hilary Carlin was one of the 49 men who served for their country and was killed in Action in the First World War, whose name is listed on St Mark’s Church Cenotaph in Mosborough.    Hilary was born/baptised on 2 May 1895 FHL Film No. 6343948. He was born to Joseph and Alice Carlin, his birth place was Beighton, Derbyshire.  He lived with his parents and his brothers William age 17, Harold age 8 and his sister Beatrice 16, Alice 3, and Edith 1 year old.  This is according to 1901 Census. Vessel 28, Piece 3259, Folio 131, Page number 36.

Hilary in 1911 lived at 64 High Street, Mosbro, he worked at the age of 16 in the Coal Mine as a Hewer.  The census showed he still lived with his parents, brother Harold and his sister Lilly and Field Carlin.

Hilary enlisted at Blackwell, Derbyshire into the 1st/ 6th Battalion Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment. His regimental number was 2448. Theatre of War was France, his entry was 28 June 1915.

He was killed in action at France and Flanders on 30 March 1916 at the age of 21 years old.  He was buried at Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-Calais, France.       Plot I.C 15 Memorial ID 56570147.
