WOMAN BLAMES SEVEN-YEAR OLD FOR SHOP THEFT

But Magistrates Order £l0 Fine for “Mean and Despicable Offence”

I hadn’t the nerve to take it back and my little lad said he daren’t return it,” declared a Mosbro’ housewife when charged at Renishaw Magistrates’ Court on Monday with stealing a toy car from a shop. The woman, pleading Not guilty, told the Bench that her young son had put the toy car down his jumper when he was in the shop with her.

 

In Court was Mrs. Leah Durber (37), 35 Westfield Crescent. Mosbro was found “Guilty” by the Bench was fined £10 and ordered to pay £1/2/11 costs – “a stiff fine” said the Chairman Mr Cyril Calow but the offence he added was “men and despicable”.

Supt E Wallis, prosecuting. said that Durber went into the shop of Mr Eric Wright in High Street, Mosbro’ on November 5th along with her son aged seven.  The shop assistant. Mrs. May Revill 48 High Street. Mosbro. had to bend down behind the counter when serving her.  As 18 year old Miss Audrey Hinchcliffe Sheffield Road, Killamarsh who also worked in Wright’s shop was going in.  Durbar and her son came. She saw Durbar carrying a coloured cardboard box under her arm and knew that this was a toy Jaguar car. Before long the car was miss by Mrs Revill and immediately the police were informed went on Supt. Wall and Durbar was seen by PC John Keeble and Sergt T Sanderson on November 8th.  In reply to the officers’ questions she said “Who me”?

 

LAD TOOK IT Told she had been seen carrying the toy away from the shop, she admitted. “It was my little lad that took it two months I was with him in the shop. I haven’t got eyes in the back of my head.  I saw if down his jumper and took it off him.  Asked why the toy had not been returned she replied: I didn’t like to send him back with it”.

 

Supt. Wallis said the toy car was recovered from as upstairs room and the box, and instructions leaflet were found downstairs.

Evidence agreeing with the story told by Supt. Wallis was given in court by Mrs Revill, Miss Hinchcliffe and Pc Keeble.

 

“DAREN’T RETURN IT”

 

Mrs Durber told the Bench:  I didn’t know there was such a thing as a toy motor in the shop.  I didn’t know where my little lad had got it from.  I hadn’t the nerve to take it back and my little lad said he daren’t return it”.

 

After the Bench had announced that Durber was “Guilty”, Supt Wallis said that she had four previous police convictions for stealing. “In this case” he added it was not so much the theft, as the explanation she made.”

 

Durber was ordered to pay the fine at the rate of £2 a week and told she would go to prison for two months if she failed to pay.
