THE CRICH LANDSLIP – SATURDAY, JULY 15, 1882 – THE ECHO AND TIMES.

THE ECHO AND TIMES, SATURDAY, JULY 15, 1882 THE CRICH LANDSLIP.

A great landslip took place on Thursday the west slops Crlch Cliff, Derbyshire

For some time past the quarrying operations of the Clay Iron Company have relented in considerable falls limestone rock, and of late, through the cutting of the supporting buttress, the rock on the west side of the hill feet above the sea level! has gradually slipped downwards, culminating on Thursday in an extensive and disastrous fall, which engulphed the residence of Mrs. Luke Akop, a lady well known in the locality, and also some cottages adjoining.

The destruction of property baa he on very great, and, as the whole mass is still moving, is impossible estimate where the damage may end. The turnpike road from Cromford to Crich has been destroyed. No lives were lost, timely warning was given of the subsidence.

Even now immense masses of rock are detaching themselves from the hill-side, and, falling with resistless Impetuosity, sweep away the trees the reeds.
