The new Queen (Miss Evelyn Hutton) Mosbro’ and District Hospital Carnival was inaugurated yesterday (Thursday) by the crowning ceremony in the Hall Farm grounds before a fair attendance. After a parade through the village, headed by Eckington Prize Jazz Band, the ” Queen’s” retinue was heralded by Sapper W. Green and Scout G. Greaves. The Vicar (the Rev. M. Holmes) presided and spoke of the work accomplished in the hospital, where the retiring Queen” (Miss Hilda Wheeldon) had been a patient.
The opening ceremony was performed by Canon Baker, Rector of Handsworth, who deputised for Mrs. Baker. Supporting him on the platform were Mrs. J. W. Spencer and Mrs. J. J. Clayton. The crowning ceremony was performed by the retiring Queen,” who expressed her appreciation of the co-operation she had received throughout her year of office.
She welcomed her successor. Miss Evelyn Hutton, the new “Queen” expressed gratitude for having been elected to such a position and emphasised that the hospitals needed their help and now was the time for them to give a helping hand. The “Queen” was attended by Misses Elsie Bell, Vera Smedley, Winifred Dawes and Betty Walker, and Geoffrey Bennett (page boy). A bouquet was presented to the retiring ” Queen” by Miss Betty Bircumshaw, and buttonholes were presented to the chairman and the opener by Vincent Fisher and Miss Sheila Turner. A pushball match was played later in the evening, and the Queen and retinue made a tour of the village. The gala day is tomorrow (Saturday 24th July 1937).
