Residents Oppose Proposed Gypsy/Traveller Site Near Mosborough

Mosborough, Derbyshire – 18 August 2025

A controversial proposal to develop a large Gypsy/Traveller site near Mosborough has sparked strong objections from local residents and the Mosborough History Group.

North East Derbyshire District Council has identified land adjoining Gashouse Lane, Eckington, as one of four potential locations for Gypsy/Traveller pitches in its new local plan. This could be combined with housing and/or industrial developments. The site, currently used as pony paddocks, could be allocated for up to 50 mobile homes, complete with parking areas, touring caravan spaces, day rooms, and hard-standing facilities.

According to the Council, there is an unmet need for Gypsy/Traveller pitches both locally and nationally, a factor they say must be given significant weight in considering the proposal.

However, the Mosborough History Group has voiced strong objections, citing the site’s rural location outside any settlement boundary, lack of essential services, and impact on the surrounding green belt land.

“People are furious at this attempt to effectively build on precious green belt land,” said Philip Staton, Chairman of the Mosborough History Group. “The site is only accessible via a narrow country lane and would be visible from adjoining footpaths and from Sheffield Road.”

The group also highlights that the Council’s own assessment indicates a requirement for only three pitches across the district up to 2040 – a fraction of what is proposed for the Mosborough site.

John Rotherham, a member of the group, added: “This land is designated for agricultural purposes and is not suitable for residential or Gypsy/Traveller use. The scale of this proposal is far beyond the actual identified need and is disproportionate to the requirement.”

The Mosborough History Group is urging residents to lobby local councillors to reject the proposal.
