SERGEANT LEONARD HAVENHAND

Sergeant Leonard Havenhand was born to Alexander and Amy Havenhand of Mosborough Derbyshire around July 1922.

He enlisted into the 76 Sqdn Royal Air Force, is Service No was 1459226.

 

 

 

 

Leonard died on 30th March 1943 at the age of 20 years old.  He was married to Iris L Shaw.  He is buried at Kiel War Cemetery Germany, Area Kiel Schleswig-Holstein.  Reference 4.J.16.

 

Inscription says:   “IN LOVING MEMORY OF LEONARD WHO DIED FOR HIS COUNTRY. ALWAYS LOVED AND REMEMBERED”

 

The last operation information for Sergeant Leonard Havenhand was as follows:

 

On 29 March 1943 at 21.48 at the take off station, Linton-on-Ouse on a night raid on the HalifaxII DT744.  Operations was Berlin 329 aircraft, 21 losses) 6.4% in poor weather conditions with significant icing problems. PFF marking was inaccurate and the main force arrived late and bombing was largely ineffective.

 

Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed between Gaushorn and Welmbttel two villages 4 km and 3 km respectively SW of Tellingstedt.
