Lance Corporal Haydn Froggatt

Haydn Froggatt was born to Israel and Ethel Froggatt who lived at 131 High Street, Mosborough, Derbyshire in 1921.

Haydn enlisted into the 4th Arm;d Bde Coy Royal Army Service Corps, his service number was T/1263823.  He served in North Africa and was awarded the African Star.  Lance Corporal Froggatt died on 24 June 1943 by accidently drowning (according to the newspaper clip below).

 

 Inscription says:  A TRIBUTE OF LOVE TO OUR DEAR SON HAYDN WHO GAVE HIS ALL. DUTY NOBLY DONE

 

Haydn was buried at Bone War Cemetery, Annaba, Algeria 22 VII.D.10

Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald – Friday 09 July 1943

DROWNED IN NORTH AFRICA L./CPL. H. FROGGATT, MOSBRO’ Mr. and Mrs. Froggatt, 331, High Street. Mosbro’. received a telegram Thursday week, informing them that their son. L./Cpl. Haydn Froggatt, of the R.A.S.C., had been accidentally drowned. The following day, official information was received to the effect that he was accidentally drowned on June 25th in North Africa. Aged 22, he was called to the Colours in April, 1941. and left for North Africa, having taken part in a number battles with the Armoured Division, including the smashing of the Axis forces in the Cape Bon Peninsula. On Friday, his parents received two letters from him stating he was doing fine and keeping well, concluding with “Keep smiling.” He was a capable swimmer and had undergone intensive training and swimming with full Army kit. He has a brother serving in the Army.
